Let's get a little geeky for a moment, shall we? The benefits of sound therapy can be analyzed when science looks at frequency. Everything is has a unique frequency. Everything. Thoughts, emotions, body organs, cells all have a frequency. If the frequencies get disrupted, imbalance occurs and symtoms of disease appear. Sound therapy can help to bring those frequencies back into balance using musical tones, singing, or chanting.
The Brain
The brain is the command center of the body. It directs all functions including movement, thinking, breathing, heart rate, and the senses. The brain is made up of millions of neurons that communicate with each other through electrical impulses. These impulses are called brain waves. These brain waves are grouped into different categories depending on the frequency of these impulses.

The slower the frequency, the less active the brain. The faster the frequency, the more active the brain. The brain waves are measured in hertz (Hz), or cycles per second. Again, the brain wave frequency determines what state we are in, from sleep, to vigorous activity.
Brain waves can be measured using an electroencephalogram (EEG). Electrodes are placed on a person's head, and can detect these electrical impulses. They are then sent to an amplifier then to a computer where they can be viewed as waveforms in a graph format.
Beta brain waves 14-40Hz - Awake Conscious and Reasoning
Beta brain waves are associated with a normal waking state, alertness, logic and critical reasoning. Beta brain waves are important for effective functioning throughout the day. If out of balance, overactive beta brain waves can begin to manifest as stress, anxiety, and overthinking.
Alpha brain waves 7.5-12Hz - Deep Relaxation
Alpha brain waves are present in deep relaxation, day dreaming, or during light meditation. Typically with eyes closed, it is an optimal time to program the mind for success, use affirmations, and creative visualization. Alpha brain state allows access to greater imagination, memory, learning, and concentration. This is an optimal brain state to get in touch with your intuition and access your subconscious mind/subconscious awareness.
Theta brain waves 4-7.5Hz - Deep Meditation: Approaching Sleep
Theta brain waves are present during deep meditation and sleep, including REM dream state. It is the realm of your subconsciousness and only experienced momentarily as you drift from to sleep from Alpha and wake from deep sleep (Delta). At this frequency, you are conscious of your surroundings, however your body is in deep relaxation. It is said that a sense of deep spiritual connection and unity with the universe can be experienced at Theta. The mind's deep-seated programs are at Theta and it is where you experience vivid visualizations, great inspiration, profound clarity, and exceptional insight. The Alpha-Theta Border (from 7Hz-8Hz) is the optimal range for visualization, mind programming, and using the creative power of your mind. This is the mental state in which you create your reality.
Delta 0.5-4Hz - Deep Sleep and Restful Slumber
Delta frequency is the slowest of the brain wave frequencies. It is experienced in deep, dreamless sleep or in deep transcendental meditation. This is a place where awareness is fully detatched. Delta is the realm of your subconscious mind. The gateway to the universal mind and the collective unconscious. This is the place where information recieved is unavailable at the conscious level.

Entrainment
The science of entrainment is the study of the synchronization of oscillating systems. Dutch scientist Christian Huygens first described this process in 1665. He was the inventor of the pendulum clock and found that after a short time, multiple clocks hanging from the same beam began to swing in unison. Entrainment can be applied to heartbeats, brainwaves, and cells when they are exposed to an external rythym and they begin to attune themselves and synchronize their behavior to the stronger vibration. This is achieved during sound therapy when the frequency of your cells match that of the instruments used in the session.
When we look at healing through the lense of sound sessions, science shows us that the brain and body become highly engaged using frequencies. As the body relaxes, the brain waves become slower, inducing higher states of rest and even consciousness. This manifests in the body as less stress, lowered heart rate, relaxation, and overall better health.
